: A whining expert's honest thoughts on the farmer's market (HOT)
I feel like farmer’s markets offer much more charm than practicality. We went to a farmer’s market this morning that was described to us as super cute & having an air-conditioned part, which is like, the precise two things you could add to a farmer’s market to differentiate it from the quite-adequate one we went to last month.
Anyway, we cruised around, had a good time, but I think I’m just pathologically annoyed by hustle. Every single stand operator wanted to engage us in superficial chit-chat about our lives and how we got there and their vision for their business and like, I get that this earnestness is part of the appeal for farmer’s market enjoyers, but for me … making superficial chit-chat for business ends is big part My Job and all the moves seem so obvious, the stakes so adversarial (implicit undertone: are you gonna buy something or just walk on?) that it was hard to call this relaxation.
OK, wow, that wasn’t actually the take I meant to write. What I wanted to say was, the idea of picking out some heirloom tomatoes and fun baked goods by hand has a certain instagram appeal in it, but once you look at all those cheese dips and supposedly fresh vegetables and egg tarts baking in the sun you start to fantasize about a supermarket, you know? With linoleum and mops and A/C.
Oh yeah, about the A/C: They had it, but inexplicably, the A/C was on in the crafts area and all the edible stuff was out getting tan lines. I have heard that a lot of farmer’s markets give out stands on a first-come, first-served basis so maybe all the crafts folks pulled up at 5am? Anyway, it all seemed a bit suboptimal.
What are your thoughts on the farmer’s market? Let me know on my—oh FUCK I haven’t FINISHED my guestbook yet like I promised to but that’s because I was working hard on a Very Special Feature called Not Leaking Your Email. Here’s an old meme:
